Pawportunities Animal Welfare Services

Your new best friend may be waiting.

Adoption changes two lives: theirs and yours. Start by exploring our available dogs, then complete one application to help us find the right match for your home.

How adoption works

A thoughtful path to a lasting match

Because most of our dogs live in foster homes, their fosters can share the real-life details that help families make confident decisions.

1

Find a dog

Browse our available animals and note the dog or dogs who may fit your family.

2

Apply

Complete the application below with honest, detailed information about your home and lifestyle.

3

Application review

Our team reviews your application and may contact you if clarification is needed.

4

Meet and greet

Once approved, we help connect you with the foster or arrange the next step to meet the dog.

5

Make it official

If it is the right fit, complete the hold and adoption steps provided by our team.

Applications are not reservations.

Dogs can receive significant interest, and availability may change while an application is being reviewed. A dog is not reserved until Pawportunities confirms that the required hold process has been completed.

Why foster-based adoption matters

A foster home shows us who a dog really is outside a kennel. Fosters often know the dog's routines, personality, energy level, and how the dog responds to everyday family life.

  • Better insight into personality and needs
  • More informed conversations before adoption
  • A smoother transition into a forever home

Choosing the right dog

The dog you first notice may not always be the dog who best fits your household—and that is okay. Our goal is not simply to complete an adoption. It is to help create a safe, lasting family.

Please consider activity level, size, age, other pets, children, housing rules, and the time a new dog will need to adjust.

Frequently asked questions

Can I meet a dog before applying?

Because most dogs are in private foster homes, the application and approval process generally comes before foster contact or a meet-and-greet.

Where are the dogs located?

Our foster families are located throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area on both sides of the state line. Some dogs may also be at our Blue Springs location.

Do you adopt to families outside the Kansas City area?

Yes. We accept applications from qualified adopters outside the Kansas City area and in other states. Adopters must travel to the Kansas City area for the required meet-and-greet and local pickup. Pawportunities does not ship or transport adopted dogs.

Does an approved application guarantee the dog I selected?

No. Approval means you can move forward in the process, but it does not reserve a particular dog. Availability can change until the required hold process is completed and confirmed.

What if the dog I selected is no longer available?

We regularly welcome new dogs into care. Our team may be able to help you explore another dog whose needs and personality fit your home.

Why do you ask so many questions?

Each dog has different needs. Your answers help us consider safety, housing, other animals, activity level, and the kind of transition that will give both your family and the dog the best chance to succeed.
